More than most Georgia lakes, Lake Blackshear is what a bass fisherman would call a “target-rich” environment. Everywhere there are grassbeds, cypress trees, logs, stumps and docks that all look like they hold bass.

Pouring rain didn’t hinder the Georgia Bass Chapter Federation Youth Top-Six Championship held April 5 at Lake Sinclair. Fishing from the same boat, Brandon Curl of the Bryan County Jr. Bassmasters won the 15- to 18-year-old age group with 10.67 pounds, and Mark Denney Jr. of Central Georgia Bassmasters weighed in 10.6 pounds to win the 11- to 14-year-old age group. Both anglers also took big-fish honors for their age divisions. Mark’s kicker weighed 6.11 pounds, and Brandon’s tipped the scales at 5.02 pounds. Both will now move on to the Junior World Championship to be held at Lake Monticello, S.C. Aug. 15-16.
