Hunt Story

My son and I were siting in a 2-person stand. He stated, "Daddy there is a big buck over there." I said, "Where." If he could have, he is 8 years old, he would have said right there dummy. The deer was 135 yards away. He disappeared behind some of the thick undergrowth. I though, oh know he is gone. Just then he re-appeared and gave me a left quartering front shot. The shot range out, but no reaction from the deer as to being hit. Having chambered another round, like a squirrel on a white oak, I was ready when he ran in front and presented a broadside. Fired again and struck the last bit of lung and liver. He took off like a jack rabbit. Chambering again. I fired a third time as he ran up a hill and leaped like a Olympic high jumper. Fearing a bad shot and dark descending fast, we got out of the stand 15 minutes later. Found no blood, but we mentally marked the location he ran across a 4-wheeler trail. We moved into the thick stuff toward his direction of flight. At almost dark we jumped him 20 yards into the thick. Being dark and super thick we backed out. Called Idaho Mike, an excellent tracker with dogs. Mike showed up and we went for the recovery. "Lucy" the dog was incredible. While we talked about were to start the track, the dog was on the trail where the deer crossed the 4-wheeler trail. Five minutes latter the GPS on the dog showed she was in one spot. 300 yards latter Sir Bucksley, my son named him, was making my eyes water with joy. The story is even longer and more meaningful to me, but those parts I we keep for me. Thanks be and God bless
