Hunt Story
I had just gotten into my stand as it was breaking daylight. Once I got settled into my stand, there was enough light to see across the pasture. I had been watching to my right with the binoculars and turned to scan the pasture to my left. There was a deer standing in the field about 150 yards away. Before I pulled up the binoculars, I could tell it was good buck, but it was still early with not a lot of light. I quickly looked through the binoculars and started reaching for my rifle. He was slowly walking to the southwest, and I needed to shoot quickly before he went back into the woods. I was going to have to shoot through an old fence line that had grown up, so I picked an opening in front of the buck. As, he walked into the opening, I made the shot. Due to the growth in the fence line, I didn’t see what happened to the buck after the shot. I knew he didn’t run back across the field. After 20 minutes or so, I couldn’t take it any more so I got down to go look for him. I eased across the field and finally saw antlers sticking up above the fescue grass before I ever saw his body. He had gone straight down at the shot. There was no ground shrinkage with this deer. After a prayer with the Lord thanking him for this fine animal, I started burning up the phone to family and friends sharing the news.
