Lake Weiss Fishing Report July 2016

GON Staff | June 29, 2016

Weiss: Level: 1.1 feet below full pool. Temp: Mid 80s. Clarity: Light stain.

Bass: Guide Mark Collins reports, “Bass fishing is good. Most fish have started moving to deeper cover, under deeper docks and to the creek and river channel ledges. Bass are being caught on medium- to deep-running crankbaits, 1/2-oz. spinnerbaits, Carolina-rigged plastics and jigs. The topwater bite is still strong on deeper banks and seawalls early and late. It’s taking 20-plus-lb. stringers to win the tournaments. The bass fishing on Weiss rivals Lake Guntersville for the last two years. The Weiss Lake Improvement Association and Weiss Lake Anglers will be stocking Florida strain largemouth this fall.”

Crappie: “Fishing is fair,” said Mark. “Most crappie are on deeper cover and the river channel ledges, and they can be caught spider rigging with minnows.”

Stripers: “The fishing is good, and they are being caught in the lower Chattooga River, at the Cave Hole in Little River and Little Spring Creek,” Mark said. “Try downlining and flatlining live shad 8 to 10 feet deep in the river channel.”
