Hunt Story

About 6:15, a 6-point buck and a spike came out looking for does from our left. They fed until about 6:25, and went into the woods. After that, 4 does came out running from the 2 small bucks. They ran for about 5 minutes, then went to our right into the woods. The 6-point went back to our left, and we never saw him again. At about 6:40 or 6:45, two of the does came out and fed about 100 yards straight in front of us. I saw one of them run to the tree line, and something big chased it off. I told myself to stay alert, and that with it being 41 degrees, a big buck was bound to come out somewhere. Then the spike came out chasing does, and I knew the action was about to start. We had a trail camera set up in the food plots and in the woods in front of us, so looking at the pictures I saw that the buck came out at 6:48 PM. As I was watching the smaller bucks chase does, I saw directly in front of us the biggest buck I've ever seen in my life staring at me. I can't even remember throwing my gun up and flipped the safety off, but I could hear my grandpa whispering in my ear to wait for him to get broadside and get earmuffs on. I got the muffs on and looked at him through the scope and instantly recognized the "crab claw" points on his antlers, giving him the name "Mr. Crab". The deer ran off to my left after a doe, and I knew this would be my only chance. At last, he stopped broadside at 130 yards, and I fired. Watching the deer run off out of the field and into the woods to die, I remembered the 2 years of history following that deer. The deer that showed his face so many times, but only came out one time in front of a hunter. I couldn't believe what I had just done. As I came back into reality, I thought I recognized another shooter in the field, so I bolted and got ready to shoot when he looked at me and I saw he was just a small 8. He ran out of the field and we got my deer. This was one of the happiest days of my life. He will look good on my wall.
