Hunt Story

We began watching this deer as a 2-year-old during the 2013-14 deer season, and we knew he would be a special buck. We placed him off limits until the 2016-17 deer season, but he didn't present a harvest opportunity last year. Going into the 2017-18 deer season, he spent most of his time in his usual summer area. In the week leading up to the season, he began showing some shooting light feeding activity right at dusk, which was very unusual for him. I decided to hunt him on September 16th because the weather data was similar to when he showed up in shooting light (and my wife let me hunt that night). At 6:57 PM, I saw him walk out of a thicket approximately 90 yards away, spend a few minutes on his feet, and go back into the thicket. Forty five minutes later, seven other deer were feeding in the field when he emerged from the thicket again. He watched the field for a few minutes then slowly moved toward the field along a main trail. When he passed my stand at 24 yards, I took the shot, and we recovered him an hour later.
