Truth in Nature held its final program of the year on Dec. 1, a deer hunt outside of Waco at Walker Creek Outdoors. Truth in Nature is a Christian outdoor ministry for youth from one-parent homes. “During this hunt we had 10 youth/volunteer teams in the woods,” said Jeff Davis, founder of Truth in Nature. “One of the volunteers was our Louisiana Chapter Program Director Michael Rivers. He was paired with one of our regular attendees, Tanner Hillman.
Our mission was simple: Strike out before daylight, walk for a half hour and arrive in an area of hardwoods at shooting light and start squirrel hunting. A friend of mine had seen some hog sign in this particular area back during turkey season, and I was curious to see if the rooters were still hanging around. Pretty cool concept, huh? Well, the concept is a reality. DNR’s Hunt and Learn program, currently offered at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center (CEWC) in Jasper County, is...

Would you like to hunt an exclusive, exotic island, set with tall palmetto and live oak trees, pristine beaches, fertile marshes, an abundant hog population and a deer herd of 70 per square mile? The area is hunted five times each year, and each hunt is limited to a strict quota. It is accessed only by boat, and hunt personnel provide transportation to hunt areas and game pickup. A restroom with hot showers and a game cooler are also available for hunters. Since this is a state land and the...
