Help & Info

Here is some important information about the new GON Marketplace:

REGISTRATION

The GON Marketplace does NOT use the same login system as the main GON magazine site or the GON Forum. You'll need to create a new login for the GON Marketplace, even if you already have an account on GON.com and/or the GON Forum.

PLEASE NOTE: If your GON Forum username contains anything other than letters and numbers, you'll need to use the workaround described here to register for the GON Marketplace:

How to register when your GON Forum username contains non-alphanumeric characters

FREE LISTINGS FOR GON FORUM MEMBERS

GON Forum members in good standing who have been members for at least 6 months (180 days) and have a post count of 100+ will be able to post 2 ads at a time for free.

The system will update your account when you meet the criteria for posting free ads. This happens automatically several times a day.

To view your join date & post count:

  1. Login to the forum
  2. Click on your name in the upper right, where it says "Welcome, {your name}"
  3. Click on the Statistics tab

You will have an opportunity to link your GON Forum account when you create your new GON Marketplace account. You can also link your accounts anytime after registration by logging into your GON Marketplace account and going to My Account > GON Forum Account Status.

POSTING ADS

Anyone can post ads in the Swap 'n Sell.

All ads are assumed to be items for sale. But you can also post ads for items you are looking for or want to trade.

If you are posting a want ad, please post your ad in the appropriate category but prefix your ad with "WTB". For example, if you're looking for a shotgun, you might post the following in the Guns category:

WTB: 12 ga. shotgun in good condition

Similarly, if you're looking for a trade, please prefix the title of your post with "WTT".

RENEWING AN AD

Free ads can not be renewed. These ads must be uploaded again using the normal procedures. Paid ads are available for renewals however renewing your ad will not move it to the top of the category listing. If you want the listing to refresh to the top of the category listing then you must upload the ad again as a new posting.

EDITING OR CLOSING AN AD

To edit one of your ads, click on the My Account link in the main menu bar, then click the My Listings link.

To edit an ad, click the corresponding Edit link on the right side of the page.

To close an ad, click the Edit link then change the ad status to "Closed".

HOW TO AVOID SCAMS

When you post an ad online, anyone anywhere in the world can contact you. Here are some common sense rules from craigslist to help you stay safe:

  • ONLY DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one simple rule and you will avoid 99% of the scam attempts online.
  • NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is a scammer.
  • FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.
  • NEVER GIVE OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, etc.)
  • AVOID DEALS INVOLVING SHIPPING OR ESCROW SERVICES
  • ONLY A SCAMMER WILL "GUARANTEE" YOUR TRANSACTION. GEORGIA OUTDOOR NEWS (GON) IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY TRANSACTION, and does not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow services, or offer "buyer protection" or "seller certification".

PROBLEMS POSTING ADS OR CHECKING OUT?

If you are having problems adding ads to your cart or checking out, try this:

  1. Click on the following link to clear your Marketplace browser cookies: http://www.gon.com/marketplace/forum_users/fix_cookies
  2. Log back into the Marketplace and click on the "My Cart" link at the top. If you have any items in your cart, delete them by clicking the red X.
  3. Re-create your ad(s) and try to go through the checkout process again.

If you are still having problems after following the steps above, try using an alternate web browser like Firefox or Safari. Most members who have had problems with Internet Explorer have been successful when trying one of these browsers instead.

Please let us know if this does not fix your problem.
