QUAIL SPECIAL

Find a plantation quail hunt - or your own birds - from our list.

Crisp, bitingly cold January air greets you as you step into the field. The tinkle and chime of bells on the dogs’ collars ring as the pointers leap from the dog boxes, whining, eager to hunt. Shotgun shells slip into break-actions and autoloaders, and the quail hunt is under way. The pair of pointers surge though the grass, searching for scent — then they lock down, one behind the other, tails rigid, with a fixed, bird-dog-serious stare into a clump of grass and briars. The dog handler steps forward. “They’ll likely break toward the pines,” he warns as you bring your shotgun to port arms. Then, in a flurry of brown wings, the covey flushes, and brown-and-white bobwhite whirr into the air. In moments, with the acrid smell of gunpowder in the air, a dog delivers your prize to your hand. Not so long ago, Georgia was considered the quail capital of the world, with scenes like this repainted thousands of times each season. Then with changes in agricultural practices and land use, the wild bobwhite faded from the hunting scene. The opportunity for quail hunting — of days spent afield behind a brace of hard-working pointers and plenty of quail is still alive and well and as close as these pages. In the following pages of GON’s Second Annual Quail Special, we have gathered the contact information for some of the state’s best plantation quail operations. Hunts are offered that vary from fully catered, five-star affairs to folks with great land and birds and an opportunity for you to work your own dogs. For the do-it-yourself quail hunter with his own bird dogs, we have included a list of quail breeders where you can purchase birds for a day afield. There are quail-hunting memories to be made within these pages.

The following lists feature businesses across the state to help you plan the perfect quail hunt. Find a plantation that fits your needs or contact a breeder to supply birds for your own shoot.
