Lake Russell Fishing Report January 2017

GON Staff | December 22, 2016

Russell: Level: 2 feet low. Temp: 50-55 degrees. Clarity: Clear.

Bass: Tournament angler Kerry Partain reports, “The fishing is good right now, and there are a lot of active fish in several different areas of the lake. We have been catching bass and a few stripers in the major pockets or in the smaller creeks as they have been feeding heavily on shad the last few weeks. On cloudy or foggy mornings, the fish have been very aggressive and will hit anything from a jigging spoon to a jerkbait. As the water continues to cool down, expect the fish to bunch up more on the drops and deeper winter holes. The birds have shown up recently, so when I see gulls and loons, I know there are some baitfish and bass nearby. This is when I scan the area with my trolling motor using my Lowrance electronics to find the active fish. The bite should continue to be good this month, so keep a jerkbait handy for stripers as you fish a jigging spoon, drop shot or a jig for bass.”
