Russell March 2012 Fishing Report

By GON Staff

Russell: Level: 2.4 feet below full pool. Temp: 52-54 degrees. Clarity: Mostly clear.

Bass:
Good. Tournament pro Trad Whaley reports, “Some spotted bass are starting to pull up on main-lake points and secondary points, and they’re starting to bite a jerkbait pretty good. Still not a lot of largemouths being caught, but those that are up in the creek arms and hitting Shad Raps. In a month, the fish ought to move — I think we’re going to have an early spawn this year on all the lakes. There should be a few good waves of spawners coming on. Right now the spinnerbait bite is almost nonexistent. A few fish are moving into the trees. As long as there’s sunshine, there’s a little bit of a fluke bite in there. The fish should get on the sides of the channel turns and shoal markers soon. A Bladerunner and Pulse Jig will produce some good catches like that by the middle of March. The full moon in March will see some spots spawning in 8 to 10 feet of water. Use a jig head, suspending jerkbait or a crankbait like a DT 10. There’s a new lure called a Pulse Rig that’s got four Pulse jigs on it. It’s going to be real good coming through cover — you can throw it on Russell for fish suspended in the timber.”
