This year’s Outdoor Blast will feature a mix of classic events like the Truck-Buck Shoot-Out and State Duck Calling Contest along with some new features and attractions.

The Outdoor Blast is a weekend gathering for sportsmen put on by Georgia Outdoor News magazine. This year’s Blast will be July 22-24 in Macon at the Centreplex.

The Outdoor Blast is the home of some at Georgia’s longest-running outdoor events for sportsmen, including the 22nd annual Truck-Buck Shoot-Out and the 2011 State Duck Calling Championships.

There are also some new attractions at the Blast this year. The Traditional Bowhunters of Georgia (TBG) will be at the Blast with an indoor archery range for kids that will include hands-on instruction.

“We do this because we love kids and archery and bowhunting, and we want to give as many youth and parents as possible a taste of the fun,” said Joel Smith, TBG president.

The TBG range is free, and it will be open during show hours all three days of the Blast.

Another relatively new event during the Blast is a very unique Hunter Education course that incorporates an obstacle course for kids. If you have a child who needs to take their hunter education class, the Outdoor Blast is the place to get it done. The three-hour CD hunter-education class at the Blast includes a 12-station student obstacle course designed for student development in common situations found while hunting. Stations include blood trailing deer, field-dressing, tree-stand inspection, 4-wheeler safety, wildlife tracks, dangerous wildlife and plants, and more. This unique course is extremely educational and tons of fun for kids while they get their hunter-education certification. Go online to <www.gohuntgeorgia.com> to register for the Outdoor Blast 3-hour CD Class. Walk-ins are welcome. The first class is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning, July 23. Kids must first complete the online Hunter Education Course by going to <www.beasafehunter.org>.

Other highlights of the 2011 Outdoor Blast include:

• The Truck-Buck Shoot-Out, which includes preliminary North vs. South competition on Saturday, July 23 and the grand-prize finals on Sunday, July 24 at 3 p.m.

• The second annual youth-only SEEDS Shoot-Out on Saturday evening, July 23.

• Get your mount measured for County-by-County records. Official scorers will be at the Blast, measuring racks for free.

• The Georgia Bowhunter Classic — see page 68.

• The “Wall of Fame” display of the best bucks of last season.

• The 2011 Georgia State Duck Calling Contest begins Friday, July 22 at 4 p.m. For information, call Scott Hodges at (478) 808-3294, e-mail Scott at <hodgesduckdock@aol.com>, or visit the official website at <georgiaduckcalling.com>.
