The Outdoor Blast (see page 23) is offering hunters the opportunity to get their hunter-safety certificate on Saturday, July 24, but they’ll have to follow the steps below before qualifying for the class.

“Each student must complete the online Hunter Education Course by going to <www.beasafehunter.org>,” said Mike Tallant, hunter-education instructor. “At the completion of the online course, print the affidavit and sign; have a guardian sign if you are under 18 years of age.

“Next, list yourself in the Outdoor Blast hunter-education class online at <www.gohuntgeorgia.com>. It’s listed under Bibb County. No student will be admitted to the class without a signed affidavit. Parents or guardians of younger hunters (10-14) are encouraged to attend with the student.”

The class will last from 9 a.m. until noon.

“We’ll have a review, hands-on firearms instruction, tree-stand safety and an obstacle course included in the three-hour course,” said Mike. “A 50-question test at the end will be given. Students will need to make a 76 or better to pass.

“All students who attend and pass the course will receive their certification card, handouts and other hunting-related items. Many of our sponsors will donate items to be given away to students having a class test score of 90 or better.”

GON has always supported youth hunting and hunter education, so don’t miss this chance to take a course where you’ll find more hands-on opportunity than normal.

Just remember to do the online portion of the course before coming. Those who don’t complete the online version and have a signed affidavit will not be allowed to take the class.

BBQ Blast: The Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) is returning to GON’s Outdoor Blast hunting show with its BBQ Blast, a sanctioned GBA cook-off.

Here’s an overview.

• The competition will be held in the Macon Centreplex parking lot July 23-24.

• Entry fee is $210 per team; $30 of that entry fee goes to a special sauce category.

• Teams cook in three categories: ribs, pulled pork and pork loin.

• Before competing, all team captains must be members of the GBA. Cost is $35 a year.

• We’re awarding nearly $4,000 in cash and trophies, so make plans to cook now. In addition to the competition, you’ll be a part of the fourth-annual Outdoor Blast.

For more information on the cook-off, contact Jeff Schramm, president of GBA, at (229) 317-1700.

The GBA website, where rules are posted, is <www.bbqga.com>.

GON is handling sign-up for the BBQ Blast. Fill out the coupon below, and mail it, with the $210 entry fee, to GON.
