The striper on Carters Lake are getting big. About a year and a half after a new mark was set for the Carters Lake striper record, the bar has been raised again. Angela Hawes, of Fairmount, landed a 36-lb., 42-inch striped bass on Aug. 22, beating the old record by a little more than 5 ounces. The previous record was a 35-lb., 10.65-oz. fish caught March 27, 2008.
Angela was fishing with her husband, John, when the big fish hit a downlined shad. She said it took about five to seven minutes to get it to the boat where John could net it for her.
“I’m the catcher. He’s the one who takes care of the lines,” Angela said. “His previous big fish was a 23-pounder. He’ll never live it down.”
John is having the fish mounted for Angela, and they can’t decide whether to hang it in the bedroom or in the game room.
