The second-annual Backyard BBQ Blast will take place Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Macon Centreplex. The cook-off is part of GON’s Outdoor Blast, a family-friendly hunting-and-fishing trade show.

The cooking competition, which tests culinary talents in three areas —chicken, ribs and a wild game/fish dish — is a fundraiser for SEEDS, the GONetwork’s program that promotes hunting and fishing to kids. Entry fee to cook in all three categories is $100; half of those entry fees go back to the top teams while the other half go to SEEDS.

The cook-off will take place in the Macon Centreplex parking lot. All contestants are encouraged to set up Friday afternoon, Aug. 8; however, teams aren’t allowed to stay on site overnight. There are plenty of hotels in Macon.

Teams need to set up and cook in a 20x20 area. If this is a problem, call GON. We want to accommodate everyone. Both gas and charcoal grills are allowed.

Contestants need to furnish their own meats. We ask that teams cook a little extra in all three categories so folks attending the Blast can snack on a few free samples. The free samples were a huge hit for Blast attendees last year, and we thank the teams for providing these extra vittles.

The Backyard BBQ Blast will begin at daylight on Aug. 9. Turn in times for chicken, ribs and the wild game/fish dish are 12 p.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.

Awards will be presented at 5 p.m., which gives everyone time to break from the August heat and mingle at the Blast — watch the Truck-Buck Shoot-Out, let the young ’uns play in the kids’ area or talk with hunting and fishing vendors.

Lonnie Smith, owner of Bubba Grills, is back at the Blast this year. Last year he put on several cooking seminars. His bacon-wrapped-venison-backstrap seminar had attendees drooling. Lonnie doesn’t mind sharing some of his competition techniques. Make better ribs, a tastier Boston Butt or ask about a wild-game recipe. Lonnie enjoys meeting folks, so make plans to stop by his booth and look at a Bubba Grill.

If you’re in the outdoor-cooking business, and have an interest in attending the Blast as a vendor, call GON at (800) 438-4663.
